Clearing a WC blockage
A blocked WC is the most uncomfortable blockage at home, and usually also the quickest to solve. Don't try to fix it by flushing repeatedly — the water will overflow onto the floor.
- Call-outs around the clock
- Price confirmed before the work
- An honest assessment of the problem
Typical causes
- Flushing wet wipes and hygiene products
- A child's toy or other object in the bowl
- A scaled-up or narrowed outlet
- A blockage further away — in the riser or outdoor main
How we solve it
We start with an auger through the pan's outlet. If the obstruction is further away, we open an inspection hatch and work from the pipework. If needed, we remove the pan to retrieve an object and reinstall it with a new seal.
What to try yourself and what not to
- Don't flush repeatedly — this raises the water above the bowl's rim
- If necessary, try carefully with a plunger
- Don't pour drain chemicals into the bowl if you suspect a foreign object
- Shut off the water supply if water threatens to overflow
Apartment building specifics
In an apartment building, a WC blockage may mean a problem in the shared riser, so it's worth checking whether neighbours have the same issue. In that case we inform the association, since the solution may affect the whole stack.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I use a drain-clearing product?
- We don't recommend it in a WC — the chemical sits in standing water, doesn't dissolve objects and makes the job dangerous for the fitter. Be sure to tell us if you've used any chemical.
- What if every WC in the building is blocked?
- Then the blockage is in the riser or outdoor main. In that case we use jetting and, if needed, a camera inspection.
