Kitchens and bathrooms behave differently
In the kitchen, the main culprit is grease, which builds up in layers in the pipe as it cools. In the bathroom the cause is usually hair and soap scum in the trap or floor drain.

- Remove any debris accessible by hand from the trap
- Try a plunger, covering any extra openings with a wet cloth
- Avoid excessive corrosive chemicals if the trap is old metal
