How replacement works
- Disconnecting water and electricity and draining the tank
- Removing the old water heater and taking it away by agreement
- Checking the mounting and installing the new water heater
- Renewing the connections, valves and safety valve
- Filling, pressure checking and a test run
Why replace the connections at the same time?
Old hoses and valves are as old as the water heater itself. Leaving an old connection on a new unit is the most common cause of a leak a couple of months after replacement.
What to think through before replacement
- The new water heater's capacity and dimensions — will it fit the same spot or need a bigger niche
- Whether the connections (pipe spacing, height) suit the new model or need changing
- Whether there's a drain for the safety valve and where water goes in an emergency
- Whether the old anode is already worn and a new one should be fitted right away
Apartment building unit vs. house
In an apartment, the water heater often has to fit into a tight niche or cupboard, and if pipes need extending in the wall, the neighbours need to be considered. In a house there's usually more room to choose a suitable location and a larger capacity, so hot water lasts even with several usage points at once.
